In the dining room she saw Robert sitting at a table with his fiddle resting next to him. Grinning at her as she approached, Susana felt a flush creeping up her face. Why did she care if he smiled at her, or seemed to enjoy her presence? Clearing her throat she announced in what she hoped was a business like tone, “I hope you got some sleep. We have a lot to accomplish today.”

His grin quickly disappeared. “Yes. Of course. Don’t want to cause you any more trouble than necessary.”

He’s hurt, Susanna thought. She softened and said, “I heard you playing this morning. I thought it was amazing,” as she sat down across from him.

Now it was Robert’s turn to blush. “Thank you.”

“You’re a natural musician I can tell.” Their conversation came to a halt as Rory walked out of the kitchen carrying two plates.

“You’re not joining us?” Susana queried.

Rory shook her head. “You two only have a limited amount of time to figure this out. I would just be in the way and besides there’s too much work that I need to do.” She bustled off into the kitchen again as Rowan’s head peeked around the corner.

They ate their meal in awkward silence, the unspoken task ahead of them weighing heavily.

“Actually,” Susana confessed, “I do have an idea. But I wanted your opinion before I mentioned anything to Rory.”

“What is it?”

“I think I’ve figured out what will help you,” Susana said shyly. “It involves music. I think you have to perform.”

“Perform?” Robert croaked out. “I don’t think I can do that. I only ever played for my family. Nobody is going to want to hear the likes of me.” The tips of his ears were reddening and it was obvious that he had no faith in himself. It was at odds with his reaction yesterday to the whole tire incident. Susana found it endearing that he had a weakness.

Reaching across the table, Susana put her hand gently on his forearm. “I want to hear you,” she insisted quietly. “Maybe you can just start with me?” She smiled encouragingly at him. Rory came back into the room and Susana quickly withdrew her hand.

“Oh, while you were out last night somebody called for you, Susana. I couldn’t find you to tell you then but . . . ” she dug her hands into the front pocket of her flour covered apron, “ . . . here it is.”

Susana took the proffered paper and read the note. Jumping to her feet she rushed from the room throwing a quick “Excuse me” over her shoulder as she fled. It was a message from the law firm she’d interviewed with the day before. She hadn’t expected to hear back from them so quickly. A knot formed in her stomach as she looked at the words again, wondering if it was good or bad news. She picked up the phone in her room and slowly dialled the numbers.

“Hello, Mr. McDougal? It's Susana MacKenzie. I’m just returning your call.
