REVIRESCO

Reviresco is an interesting word that held special meaning for me during my career and life. It is Latin in origin and means to grow green again, to grow strong or young again.

My mental approach to the game and life can be defined by this word alone. As I have mentioned many times throughout the book, when you make a mistake, fail, or do not perform to the best of your abilities, doubt and indecision start to creep into your mind. The ability to manage, overcome, and learn from these experiences is what separates the good from the great. It enabled me to overcome adversity and succeed, not only in golf but in life. If I had let those negative thoughts take root in my brain, I would have failed.

I always thought of reviresco when I failed, choked, or made a mistake. I knew that I would grow stronger with every setback. I would grow green again.

When I began my career on the Champions Tour, reviresco took on an additional meaning, the literal one—to grow green again, to grow strong or young again. I was fifty, in excellent physical and mental health, and ready to begin the next stage of my career. I knew that my window to win was now significantly shorter than it was on the PGA Tour. I figured that I had maybe five to ten years to complete my next and possibly my most satisfying career goal—the career Grand Slam on the Champions Tour.
