Myriah didn’t sleep well. The angry accusation in Anthony’s voice echoed through her mind. If she hadn’t been crying at the time, she would’ve chewed him out for being a presumptuous jerk, again, but she hadn’t wanted him to see her tears. On top of that, she’d gotten so wrapped up in planning changes to her office she’d forgotten to give Dustin the tongue-lashing he more than deserved over that lunchtime fiasco.

Despite a rough night, the sun came up. So stupid. Making plans for so early on a Saturday morning. If not for her agreement to meet Rebecca at the store and then join Dustin at the office, she’d stay in bed and have a good, old-fashioned oh-me-woe-me day. Alas, she couldn’t indulge. Didn’t have time, thanks to Dustin’s chronic nosiness and her pokiness in snatching those papers back.

Myriah pulled on an old pair of blue jeans and a t-shirt that had seen better days and headed to the store. Traffic was light, so it wasn’t long before she pulled into the parking lot of the home improvement store. Rebecca waved from just outside the front doors. Myriah plastered a smile on her face and crossed the parking lot to join her co-worker.

It took nearly an hour to gather needed supplies, including each color of paint Myriah needed for her “window”. Two area rugs would help cover the drab gray commercial carpet. Rebecca helped choose two lamps to provide better, more natural lighting than the fluorescents ubiquitous in business spaces. Myriah also bought a set of full-spectrum fluorescent bulbs to replace the standard ones for when she needed to use the existing ceiling fixtures.

They were nearly to the register before Myriah remembered the air purifier that hadn’t made it onto her shopping list. They’d need it, especially while painting in the poorly ventilated office, but also to help with overall air quality in the windowless room on a daily basis.

Rebecca giggled as they waited to check out.

“What?”

“It just hit me. I hope we can fit all of this in our cars, otherwise we’re in for an adventure.”

“We’ll get it. Trust me.” Myriah grinned at the friendly woman. “You’d be amazed what I’ve gotten into my car.”

Rebecca’s concerns almost turned out to be warranted. They couldn’t get the rolled up rugs in, even with the back seat down. Rebecca’s car was even smaller, so no way that would work.

Myriah snapped her fingers. “I’ve got an idea!” She unlocked the front passenger door, reached under the seat, hit the lever to pull the seat all the way forward, and then popped the side lever to lean the back against the dashboard. “Give them a shove now.”

Rebecca did and both rugs slid forward, meeting the back of the passenger seat. “Score!”

Myriah slammed the door and met Rebecca behind the car with a high five. It took several minutes to load everything else. Only a few items had to go into Rebecca’s little hatchback.

“You weren’t kidding about getting a lot in your car.
