Chapter 15

The donkey and the rooster conducted their usual competition at sunrise to wake the street. Mateo normally stirred at the cacophony, pulled a pillow over his head in defiance of any sliver of a notion of the traditional dawn ritual, and went straight back to sleep. He was often a restless sleeper until this very hour.

This morning, however, the other body in the bed rolled over and jostled him before falling back into slumber, leaving Mateo wide awake and astonished at both himself and the world. Letting the tourmaline pillow slide off his surprisingly limber hip, he pushed himself up against the wall at the head of the sleeping platform, and looked down at this most peculiar of creatures, his new lover.

Jonas lay sprawled on his stomach, the bedding slipped down so that his broad, muscled back and thick arse and thighs were laid out like a banquet. Mateo smoothed the palm of his hand over the expanse of tattooed brown skin, feeling ridges and hollows, scars and patches of coarser hair, leaning over him so he could trace all the way down his back along lines of ink the colour of an old bruise.

Jonas indeed wore the helm of awe on his lower back but it was too large to be confined to just his arse, as expansive a canvas as it was. Like the wayfinder sigil, it was circular, eight angular staves arranged like spokes from its centre, a ring of more indecipherable runes enclosing them, and then another ring about it all, the long scaly body of a snake-thin dragon, its head looping around to fiercely grip its own tail between its teeth.

He paused with his hand curved about the arc of dragon on one solid butt cheek like he was weighing the density of a melon, feeling a rush of desire like liquid heat, already pooling low in his belly.

‘Bet you’re thinking about fucking this quality piece of arse,’ Jonas said without opening his eyes. Mateo started and jerked his hand away, sitting abruptly upright. ‘Ah, I believe I’ve been clear as to my feelings on the matter. Go ahead and check out the merchandise, honey.’

‘Someone was lucky to get to ink this on you,’ Mateo told him, stroking the dragon’s head.

Jonas chuckled indulgently. ‘Gods know, sailing between trading ports is tedious when the winds are right and the chores are done. A willing friend or two makes the hours race along.’

Mateo ran his hand over the sigil, thinking about that. Someone—two someones?—bent over the willing Jonas, touching him just here. Maybe here. Probably here.

He traced the runic lines he’d noticed the night before, delving high between Jonas’s thighs. ‘I’m surprised you’re not covered in tattoos, then.’

Jonas spread his legs, inviting Mateo to explore further, and murmured, ‘Lying still for ink was a long way down the list of my favourite pastimes shipside.’

Reluctantly lifting his hands away, Mateo had to clear his throat before he could say, ‘Thank you for last night.’

Jonas finally opened his eyes, without lifting his head.
