The first time I saw Ziggy’s face on Animal Haven’s website, I started crying. He was staring straight into the camera and seemed to look right at me, knowing he would be my dog. On the day I picked him up, we were three steps out the door, and he suddenly wouldn’t budge. Terrified, he pressed all thirty pounds of his weight into his oversized paws and refused to move. I want to go back home, he motioned with a jerk of his tiny head.

“Look.” I beamed at him. “I know you don’t know me, but I would never do anything to hurt you ever. We are going to be best friends. Will you trust me, Ziggy?” His spotted tail started beating against my leg, his boxy head broke into a smile, and he started to walk. It was almost three miles to his new home, but with every trash bag, bicyclist, and tourist stampede, Ziggy looked up at me for reassurance and bravely pranced and sniffed past each new obstacle. It’s been like that for the past six years.

I’ve dealt with depression and anxiety my whole life and in the fall of 2014, after four wonderful years with Ziggy, I was at my lowest point ever. My desire to make my dog happy forced me to do the same for myself, so I applied to work at Bark & Co., knowing it would make me happy to make dogs happy. Despite my anxious jitters, Bark hired me. Ziggy and I walk almost three miles over the Manhattan bridge to and from work every day. Sometimes all it takes is a best friend to help you take the next step.
