THE CRAFTY LADIES AND THE CLEVER BEAGLE
CHAPTER ONE
Hannah Barry sat at the old wooden desk in her office putting the finishing touches on a report she was finalizing for a suspicious wife in town. Sheâd done the investigative work and found out that the husband in question had not been cheating on his wife, as she had suspected, but was actually working to buy her dream home and wanted to surprise her with the keys on their anniversary.
Hannah loved it when an investigation ended with such unexpectedly great news, and it was rare. She closed the case, assuring the wife that all was â incredibly â well, and that when the truth came out, she would be more than pleased. Hannah really didnât want to ruin the husbandâs surprise after all the hard work he had gone to. After making Hannah promise no less than ten times that there was no dirty business going on, she agreed to close the case.
When Hannah was finally finished with the report, she lifted her index finger in the air and pressed down on the âSaveâ icon with force. She was finished for the day! Stretching her arms behind her head, she released all the tension sheâd been holding. Mazie, her trusty beagle seemed to sense that it might be time for a w-a-l-k and roused herself out of the dog bed at Hannahâs feet, nuzzling her ownerâs legs for a little bit of attention.
Hannah felt her silky-soft floppy ears rub against her leg and laughed, reaching down to give her dog a scratch. âYou ready for a break, too, Mazie?â
Her tri-colored dogâs tail wagged back and forth, indicating that she was.
The light tinkle of the doorbell rang as Hannah was crouched down petting Mazie, she lifted her head quickly to see who it was, accidentally banging it against the edge of her desk. âOuch!â she winced, her hand cupping her temple.
âAre you okay?â a concerned voice asked from the door. It was a voice Hannah recognized well, Anita Gomez, one of her very best friends had arrived. She stood to walk over and embrace her friend. âAnita! So nice to see you! What are you doing here?â Anita and her husband, Oscar, owned the cutest local coffee shop in Blairstown, Virginia. The Jolt of Java was Hannahâs favorite place to drink a cup of hot, delicious coffee.
âIâm here on a break!â Anita replied. She still had her apron on, and her dark hair was thrown up in a messy ponytail.
âWell, come on in,â Hannah said, gesturing to the couch. âTake a load off.â
Anita followed her instructions and collapsed onto the old leather couch in Hannahâs office. She closed her eyes and flopped her right wrist over them, sighing dramatically.
Hannah furrowed her brows at her friend. âYou donât seem like your normal, care-free self, right now. Is something the matter?â
Anita groaned. âItâs hard to be carefree when your life is totally and completely consumed with work.â
Hannah cocked her head to the side, considering this statement.
