Conclusion

In all three approaches to RE presented above we do however notice particular similarities. The first is the positive protection of religion in its representation and the respectability of its claims. Following on from that, the second is the lack of scrutiny given to the rational incoherence and unacceptable practices of some religious forms. We may presume that both these failures are due to the desire to ensure that religion retains an acceptable face within modern democratic ways of life, and that the purposes of RE fall in line with that desire. In Chapter 6 we see how this favouring of specific religious interests is embedded in the political structures that underpin RE in its English context.
