ACampaigners recently won an extension of civil partnerships to heterosexual couples in England and Wales. They argued that legislation governing relationships should not discriminate on grounds of gender or sexual orientation.

BYouTubers Tana Mongeau and Jake Paul help us note the difference between marriage as a status and as a legal category. They traded enormously on being ‘married’, but their union was not legal.

Chambers envisages a situation in which states drastically change the default. Anyone who occupies a certain functional relationship: caregiver, parent, co-owner of a house and so on, should automatically be protected by the state by virtue of having that status. (They can opt out if they like.) In this view, there are no marriages. People could call themselves married and have elaborate ceremonies, but their unions would have no legal status. Indeed, modern marriage can be more centred on pomp and ceremony rather than legality anyway, with popular reality TV series Don’t Tell the Bride enchanting audiences with spectacular weddings that are not legally binding, and influencers such as Tana Mongeau and Jake Paul live streaming their extravagant weddings whilst never making them legal.

Perhaps the best way to foster a realistic monogamy ideal is to make all romantic relationships personal.
