'What will?'
'Whatever the clue is - if indeed there is a clue - to what really happened.'
'And why do you think that?' she asked.
'Because otherwise someone would already have picked up on it.'
Claire nodded. 'Makes sense.'
The only other document they eventually found, misfiled, was a copy of the Russian autopsy report. 'They sat on it,' Claire said as she scrolled through the dense text.
'I beg your pardon?'
'Kept it secret. You know.' She yawned. 'You sure you want to look through this lot? I mean, if he was dead...'
The Brigadier considered. 'Can you print it off?' he asked. 'Easier to look through it on paper than on that screen. But I think it might be worth the effort.'
'But if he was dead.'
'If, he reminded her. That is what we need to establish. If, as you say, the Soviets kept this post mortem under wraps for over twenty years, maybe they weren't sure it was really Hitler whose body they cut up.'
She paused, letting the blurred page on the screen settle into a slightly sharper image as it stopped moving. 'It's a thought. After all, they didn't even admit they knew he was dead until 1950. Maybe they had some doubt.'
'You saw the reports of aircraft leaving Berlin with mysterious passengers, Stalin's comments, all that. I think they had very grave doubts.'
The Brigadier sighed and reached for his coffee. Then he seemed to change his mind, perhaps remembering what it tasted like. 'Why did they get married?' he asked abruptly.
'What?'
'Hitler and Eva Braun. You saw the marriage certificate just now Why did he bother to marry her?'
'Perhaps,' she offered, only half joking, 'they were in love.'
'You know,' he agreed, 'I think they were. But even so. She had been his mistress, secretly, for years. Why then, as his world fell apart, did he marry her?'
'On a whim? They knew they were going to die.'
'True. But quite a whim. According to the notes with the marriage certificate, they sent Goebbels out into the war in Berlin to find a civic official to perform the ceremony.'
Claire set the autopsy printing. 'Is it important?' she asked over the harsh rasp of the printer.
The Brigadier shrugged. 'It might give us an insight into his state of mind those last days.'
