They could see right across to the far hull, and the sight of so many airlocks - so many potential entrances to the hotel – was dispiriting:

'How do we know which one they'll go for?'

'We don't,' said Hayes. 'My advice is to seal off this level altogether.

There are only three ways on to it, and I can cut power to the passenger and service lifts once Ms Wright and I have finished our search and are clear.'

'We're left with the stairs then,' said Terri. 'Come on Ben, let's see if any of these crates are full. We can drag them outside and pile them against the door.'

The quartet hurried down a flight of steps to the lower tier. Ben and Terri stopped to examine the nearest boxes, but Hayes rushed on.

Polly followed, with a reluctant glance back over her shoulder. She didn't like the idea of leaving her travelling partner with his new friend. But if there was a reason for her irrational resentment, she didn't know what it was - or didn't want to admit it.

'Give us a shout if you find a fork-lift truck in there,' Terri called after them. Her voice already seemed distant.

'Where are we going?' Polly asked, as they ploughed on deeper into the labyrinth. It didn't look as scary in the improved light, but Polly would still have found it impossible to navigate her way through. She admired her colleague's sure-footedness.

'To where I disturbed Adler,' Hayes answered. 'He'd already crossed most of the deck, so the disk can't be too far from where he was.'

And still is, Polly realised with an ice-cold shudder.

Ben and Terri had found an inordinately heavy box which, according to its label, contained sachets of dehydrated soup. They manhandled it up on to the balcony, one step at a time, and along to the stair door. It would be the first brick in their makeshift barrier. Ben hoped they could find enough other 'bricks' to keep the enemy at bay. A great many of the crates, they had discovered, were empty.

Presumably, the hotel was working through what supplies it had, with no ships arriving to deliver more or to take away the 'empties'. It brought home to him the fact of the Galaxian's death, the slow process of which had begun long before this latest threat. Soon, it would be no more than a memory. Like his own home; like his life.

The crate went through the door, not without difficulty. They dropped it, relieved, and girded themselves to go through the process again. 'So,' Terri said, as they snatched a moment's rest, 'what about these alien menaces you're supposed to have fought?'

'Oh, it's more the Doctor's line than mine.' Ben could feel his cheeks colouring. Terri watched intently, hanging on his every word, looking faintly amused. 'Wherever he goes, he seems to land us in trouble. Take this place, for instance. I help out, sure, but I'd be in a right pickle without him. I couldn't even see through the Adlers, and I was in their room talking to them.
