'Ah, Sir Blackheart's champion. Good. I have a task for you.'

'A task? You mean there is something that we primitives are good for after all?'

'A few things, yes. We are in need of more willing helpers. They fetch and carry well, but their strength is somewhat lacking.'

M a r k h a m looked about at the grubby and exhausted servants.

'You have taken all that we have.'

'Then you will need to fetch more. From the village. Strong m e n to carry and w o m e n and children to re-attach the drive circuits in the engine ducts. Slim bodies, Sir Knight, small enough to crawl through the narrowest of spaces.'

Markham shot the Krashok a look of distaste.

'If you need the help of the people from the village then perhaps it was a mistake to have killed so many of them.'

Grelt stepped down from the fireplace, towering over Markham. 'You don't like us, do you, Sir Knight?'

'It is no matter whether I like or dislike you. I do my Lord's bidding, and he bids me attend you.'

'And like a good soldier you follow orders,' Grelt smiled. 'But I can see in your eyes that you would kill me if you could. That you think we are unwelcome guests. Unwelcome save for our weapons.'

Markham's eyes dropped to the gun at Grelt's belt. The Krashok followed his gaze. 'Yes. You are a soldier. And you know what advantage a weapon such as ours would give you. Well perhaps, Sir Knight we can trade...'

Markham looked up at the Krashok quizzically.

'I have a challenge for you, Sir Knight. A quarry that might test even your mettle.' Grelt grinned.

He turned towards the wall, stabbing at controls on his armour with his claws. A beam of light sprang from his helmet, casting an image on the stone. Markham stared in disbelief, the image was moving. He moved towards it, mesmerized by the face of the thin-faced man that now stared back at him from the castle wall.

'Study him well. He may not look like much but he has already put paid to one of my most trusted Commanders.'

Markham frowned. 'But he is just a man, surely with your weapons, your powers...'

'Oh, this one is cunning. He calls himself the Doctor. Bring him to me, Sir Knight. Bring him to me and I will take that as a most generous payment.'
