To Ruby’s horror, a Goblin in a chef’s hat scattered salt and pepper, bay leaves, and powdered garlic all over Lulubelle, even crumbling some gravy granules over her nose.

‘They’re seasoning her!’ Ruby exclaimed.

‘Amazing,’ murmured the Doctor.

‘No, it is not!’ Ruby’s angry whisper was almost lost in the sound of the Goblin song reaching its crescendo. A Goblin in an eyepatch darted forward and tried to lick some of the salt off Lulubelle’s cheek, but the other Goblins roared and pulled them back, hissing and narrowing their eyes. Ruby felt cold all over. If that Goblin wasn’t allowed to eat Lulubelle … then surely none of the others were allowed either.

What were they all waiting for? Or who?

All the Goblins turned towards the end of the room, where the huge curtains made of canvas and leather hung ominously at the far end of the dining table. The drumbeats got louder, and the lead singer tossed her curly hair and sang:

Now baby’s salted, she’s a treat,

Her destiny – it’s time to eat!
