CHAPTER 11
To Ace the moors which stretched between the Darkfell and the Harbours seemed one featureless wide open space, offering them no chance of concealment if they were spotted. But the Unlike knew every inch of the moors, knew all the places in which to hide. They were often forced to cross the moors on periodic secret forays into Kirith town for food, though not, Arun reminded Ace, for zavat.
Companions frequently patrolled this area: if any of the Unlike were discovered, as proof of the mistakes of the Panjistri, they would be exterminated. Stealth and cunning were therefore essential.
Rather surprisingly Arun had elected to accompany Ace, along with Kraz, the man who had bound Ace's twisted ankle. As they travelled, Ace began to recognize Arun's exceptional bravery and courage; what the leader of the Unlike lacked in charm and warmth she certainly made up for in her determination to protect her people and ensure their survival.
Kraz was a different type, polite and courteous, but possessed of a dry sardonic wit. He began an animated conversation with Ace and she felt herself warning to the former surgeon, despite his scarred and blistered appearance.
Suddenly Arun hushed them, and pushed them down under cover of the bushes.
"What's going on?" asked Ace, and in reply felt Arum's hand over her mouth. The older woman nodded over into the distance, and Ace saw on the horizon what Arum's keen eyes had already detected.
A group of Companions under the supervision of a Panjistri was patrolling the area. These Companions were slightly taller than the ones who had pursued Ace and Raphael; they also carried guns.
"They're armed," whispered Kraz. "The Panjistri must be worried."
"Keep your head down!" hissed Arun, as Ace popped up for a better look.
Ace sighed and kept her nose to the ground. If only she had her rucksack with her: a good blast of nitro-nine was exactly what those creeps were asking for.
Raphael sat dejectedly on the metal table in his cell, his legs swinging back and forth. Miril looked at him and for one instant saw the little boy he had raised after his parents" death. At least Raphael remembered his parents, thought Miril; the Doctor, for all his knowledge, still hadn't told him why he didn't remember his.
With a sigh Raphael got up and went up to the locked door, and angrily struck it with his fist. Miril smiled kindly at the younger man.
"It's no use, Raphael."
"Ace might be in danger," he said. "We can't just sit here and do nothing."
"Our people have been doing just that for hundreds of years," he reminded him.
"Then it's time to make a stand. Break out. Go to the Darkfell."
Miril laid a fatherly hand on his shoulder. "You were always impatient and unpredictable even as a child, Raphael. I remember when you went missing for days. The whole town organized a search. And where were you? You'd climbed to the top of the Council House building to see if you could reach the stars and bring one home for Miril!"
Raphael smiled awkwardly.
