"This is more than harsh. I don't even want to think how many people are probably dead from that planetary tantrum.' She gestured in the direction of the red glass but didn't look at it. Neither did he.

'On most planets volcanoes are oblivious to the people who've decided to grow vegetables in their shadows. It isn't personal. Neither is this.' He took hold of her shoulders gently and made her face him and a truth that they shared.'Should I have let the Kulan conquer Earth because some people were unemployed and some were being tortured and there hadn't been a year without a war somewhere in - oh, probably the whole of human history?'

'Of course not, but that's a twisted bit of logic and a little manipulative, don't you think?'

'Fine. What do you think we should do?'

Anji rubbed her forehead. Part of her wanted to say, Let's go hack down some trees with Fitz's sword, free the TARDIS and get the hell out of here; but another part of her - and this was a new part - heard herself replying/Save the world, I suppose, as long as you aren't putting saving the world over saving the people on it.' He drew in a sharp breath and stared at her as if she'd just accused him of abusing his own child. Immediately, she started apologising. 'Look. I'm just upset, OK. This is all too much. It's lost all its wonder for me and now it's just… so damned ugly'

'It's the boxes,' Fitz said, coming in on the last sentence."They're mucking things about, aren't they?' He glanced over at the horses by the stream, their heads turned to the distant needle that pierced the clouds. Anji suppressed a shudder. The horses were quivering and strangely calm at the same time as if anticipating some great cataclysm they would never be able to outrun.

'I'm not sure,' the Doctor said. His eyes, like those of the horses, were now fixed on the tower. His voice was a rough whisper. Must be at least sixty miles from here and look at it.' He drew his gaze away. These brutalities, these things that seem out of sync even for here, I don't think they have anything to do with the boxes. Those forces would be trying to overwrite the existing motifs of the world. What we're witnessing are warped versions of what already exists. No, there's something else at work here, something that's damaging the planet itself, hurting it. And the boxes will only stay quiet so long as their time of greatest potential hasn't come. This chaos might well be it. We may not have as long as I'd hoped. You!' The Doctor set his vivid gaze firmly on Christina. Anji and Fitz turned, startled. They'd forgotten about her and from her expression it seemed she'd been content to keep it that way. 'I think it's time we had a proper talk about who you are, where you're from, and what you're doing here.'

'William?
