Barbara nodded. By now they had reached the head of the column.

A trumpet sounded in the still air. The soldiers reigned in their horses and sat at attention. The elephants lumbered to a halt. One of the leading pair dropped to its knees at the urgings of its rider, a slim, powerful man who looked to be in his mid-thirties.

Barbara realized this must be Ptolemy himself. He leaped to the ground, strode across to Barbara's camel and stared at her. Barbara waited nervously. The man's face was set; he obviously realized she was a fake. She tried to remember how they killed royal imposters in this time. Probably painfully.
