‘They were too busy subduing you to supervise the stopDums properly.’
The pilot perked up. ‘There you are, you see. If it hadn’t been for me you wouldn’t be able to do that.’ He peered over the Doctor’s shoulder. ‘What are you doing?’
The Doctor turned the screwdriver on its side and twisted it upwards and the lock snapped open. He stood up and opened the upper lock in the same way and then pushed the door aside and stepped out of the cage.
‘You are an agent, aren’t you?’ the pilot said half-admiringly.
‘That’s the sort of gadget they give to agents.’ He followed the Doctor out of the cage and closed the door behind them.
‘Is that what they told you I was?’ the Doctor asked, staring round the big vacant warehouse and wondering why no robot had been left to watch them. ‘The real story?’
The pilot smirked. ‘Not in so many words but I can take a hint,’ he said. ‘Listen, why don’t you lock this cage again? Might confuse them a bit.’
The Doctor smiled. ‘It might at that.’ He closed the locks.
‘Good idea...What is your name by the way?’
‘Con. Flierman Con Bartel.’
‘Flierman meaning pilot obviously,’ the Doctor said, more or less thinking aloud.
‘It’s a bit more skilled than shoving a storm mine around as it happens,’ Con remarked. ‘Robots can handle that. Fliers might be smaller but they do more and they do it quicker. Nobody would trust a robot to do what I do.’
‘Yes of course,’ the Doctor said, recalling now that pilots worked on the sand miners. Toos was the pilot on Uvanov’s sand miner. Pleasant woman as far as he remembered but given to panicking, which was probably understandable under the circumstances. And Poul who had the breakdown was an agent presumably of the same type that Con thought he was. It bothered the Doctor how many of the background details he might have forgotten. ‘I’m the Doctor,’ he said.
‘Am I allowed to know that?’ Con asked seriously.
The Doctor grinned. ‘Don’t worry, Con. If it turns out to be a major breach of security I’ll have my companion kill you.
That’s if I can ever find her again.’
Big double doors filled the far end of the warehouse and set in them was a smaller access door. The Doctor headed towards it. ‘This looks a bit like a hangar,’ he remarked. ‘Storage for fliers, that sort of thing. Is that what it is, do you think? Speaking as a flierman, I mean.’ When there was no reply the Doctor glanced back to find Con still standing by the cage. ‘Is there a problem?’
he asked.
‘I’ll stay here,’ Con said, ‘shall I? I don’t want to compromise your...um, security.’
‘Con,’ the Doctor said, gesturing for him to come, ‘I’m not an agent.’
‘I’m comfortable with that,’ Con said, nodding vigorously but not moving.
‘I’m totally unthreatening.’ The Doctor smiled encouragingly. ‘People compliment me on it all the time.’
‘Yes, I agree,’ Con agreed. ‘So I’ll wait here while you do it, whatever it is you’re going
