‘Come on, come on out! It’s perfectly safe!’

Gary’s shouts rang eerily around the cavern, and he began to wish just as fervently as the others that he’d kept his voice down a bit.

‘Sssshh!’ Michelle warned him fiercely. ‘That weirdo might still be about for all you know.’

‘I doubt it,’ returned Gary. ‘Not the amount of time we spent hiding after he’d gone.’ He made the comment disdainfully, placing the blame for the team’s inaction very much on its other members.

‘So what do we do now?’ asked Tim practically, once again heading off an argument between his comrades.

‘Look for clues, I suppose,’ suggested Tracey.

‘What’s the point?’ asked Gary. ‘We know what’s going on down here now! Some loony’s killing people as sacrifices to some sort of stupid power he believes in. What we should have done was jump him while he was still here.’

‘Oh yeah,’ scoffed Michelle, ‘I didn’t see you making a move!’

‘So we’ll have to come back here,’ said Gary, ‘and try again tomorrow!’

‘Or we could always call the police,’ suggested Tim.

‘And let them take the whole thing away from us?’ Tracey protested.

Michelle was looking at her watch. ‘Either way, we’d better get home. It’s almost eight o’clock! Dad was expecting me and Gary back for tea.’

Gary sighed and reluctantly agreed. Excited but weary, the Adventure Kids made their way swiftly back down the passage to where the steel‐runged ladder led up to the outside world.

They were about half‐way there when Michelle walked straight into someone in the dark.
