âEverything in the museum is electronically tagged, so we can see the Dalek here. Itâs already reached level 50.â
Goddard was showing the Doctor the schematic of the base on the computer. The Doctor wondered whether she had realised how quietly and effectively she had taken control. He wondered whether Van Statten had either â and decided he probably hadnât. âAre there any alien weapons in the collection?â he asked.
âOh, plenty!â said Van Statten, and laughed.
âThe trouble is,â Goddard said tersely, âthe Dalek happens to be between us and them.â
The Doctor pointed out a large blank area on the screen. âAnd here, whatâs this at level 46?â
âWeapons testing area.â
âThe Dalek will have to pass through it. Itâs the perfect place for an ambush. Give guns to everyone â the soldiers, the technicians, the lawyers. Itâs the only chance we have to take it out.â
Goddard nodded. âIâm on it.â
Van Statten said lazily, âI think youâre going about this whole thing the wrong way.â
âAnd why is that?â the Doctor asked absently, as he continued to study the screen.
âMy father was a businessman. Smartest one I ever knew. He taught me that the only way to overcome insuperable odds is to make them work for you. If you canât defeat the enemy, do a merger.â
Goddard said, âYouâve been torturing it for years. Do you think you can negotiate with it now?â
Van Statten stroked his neat, trim beard. âIâve had business rivals who would happily have seen me killed a hundred times over. But revenge is only ever a single motivating factor, and as soon as you get around the conference table, youâll always find there are better ones. All we need to do is find out what the Dalek wants. Everything wants something. Thatâs its weakness.â
âOh, Van Statten,â said the Doctor. âYou are so right. It wants something, yeah.â
âThen tell me what. Youâre the great expert. Prove your worth.â
âI wish it were revenge. Revenge would be so simple. Weâd be laughing, if it were just revenge.â
âHow so?â
âBecause then,â said the Doctor, âweâd all die, and once it had killed us, the Dalek might stop. But the Dalek wonât stop. Not ever. Whatâs the nearest city?â
Van Statten looked thrown. âSalt Lake City.â
âPopulation?â
âA quarter million.â
âAll dead. Every last one of them. When the Dalek gets out, itâll murder every living creature. Thatâs what it wants. Try getting that discussed around your conference table.â
Unnerved at last, Van Statten snapped, âBut why would it do that?â
âBecause it honestly believes they should die. Human beings are different, and different is wrong. Itâs the ultimate in racial cleansing, and you, Van Statten, have let it loose!â
Van Statten said uneasily, âI refuse to believe that.â
âYou still think thereâs a way out of this, donât you? Youâre finished. Weâre all finished. This is what youâve done. Youâve killed us all. And the most we can do, the best we can hope for, is that we donât take the rest of the world with us.â
Goddard looked up from the comms unit. She said,
