Running from the antechamber past the rider, the Doctor follows the twists and turns of the passageway beyond until he finds himself in a tunnel that has been chiselled through bedrock and follows an ever-steepening incline.

Old smugglers’ tunnel, he thinks. If I follow it downhill, I will surely reach the sea, eventually.

He’s right, of course: the tunnel eventually brings him to the vaulted space of a sea-shaped coastal cave. And the tide is in.

The Doctor’s olfactory senses are assailed by the stink of rotting fish and drowned seagulls. The only way out, other than back the way he came, is to follow a slippery ledge to the cave’s entrance and, from there, climb the wave-lashed rocks to the relative safety of the cliffs above.

But as the Doctor is shuffling along the ledge, keeping his back tight to the wall, something rises from the dark and churning waters of the inlet.

First to appear is a host of writhing, grasping tentacles, then comes a snapping beak, as a Kraken rises from the depths in search of prey.

‘This wasn’t part of the plan,’ the Doctor gasps, ‘ending up as a menu item at the Calamari’s Revenge! Let me guess –’ he activates his sonic screwdriver – ‘genetic mutation caused by exposure to non-terrestrial chemicals leaking from the fuel cells of the Terileptil ship buried under the church.’

A shrill whine fills the sea cave and the monstrous squid gives a screech of pain – the screwdriver’s sonic emissions are working on its highly sensitive auditory chambers.

Unable to bear the pain any longer, the Kraken sinks below the waves again, leaving the Doctor free to complete his escape from the cave.

Safely making his way to the foot of the cliffs, his attention is drawn to a pulsing light at the top of the previously dark lighthouse.
