“Hey you’re the one who pulled off my perfectly comfortable shirt and forced me to watch porn,” is all he says before finishing his drink and settling the bottle down.

I laugh. “It wasn’t porn, it was just a movie on Netflix.”

We both leave the club for our respective cars and head for my house. Once we’re inside, I lead him to the couch, where we both take a seat. I make sure to keep a good distance from him.

“So, how are we going doing this?” Dylan asks.

“I already have a plan. First off, we’re getting divorced after a year,” I begin.

I figure my parents will have been satisfied by then, especially if they see that we’re still not getting along after a year. Plus, it’s enough time for us to have ascertained that my dad is okay—the cancer should be gone by then. I hope, I pray.

“Alright,” Dylan says with a nod, agreeing easily. He’s watching me closely. “How are we going to explain this? We’re going to be getting married so suddenly, people will have questions.”

“Honestly, it won’t be that hard to sell it. You’ve been following me around like a lost puppy, people have been—”

Dylan interrupts me. “I have not been following you like a lost puppy,” he protests with a frown.

He kind of has.

“As I was saying,” I continue, ignoring his interruption. “People have been wondering why you’ve been acting like that. Especially since you’re usually so cold and aloof with everybody else. They all probably think you have a thing for me or something. Our story would be that you and I met before I started working at the hospital. We met at a restaurant, there were sparks, you fell for me at first sight. When I found out you worked at the hospital, I wanted to stay away because I wasn’t interested in a complicated work relationship.”

“I fell for you at first sight?” Dylan questions with a raised eyebrow. He doesn’t look overly pleased with the story I’ve concocted.

“Come on, Dylan. The best lies are the ones with an element of truth to them,” I state.

“You seem to have had a lot of practice with lying,” he points out.

“I do not,” I retort.

“Okay, moving on. Let’s say I’m the lovesick puppy in our little love story, what made you change your mind about being with me? When is the engagement going to happen? When is the marriage going to happen?”

“As soon as possible,” I say in answer to the last question. “As for the rest…” I trail off. I’ve thought about the whole marriage thing but not so much in detail.

“We can get engaged in two weeks. We’ll start at the hospital. You can come to my office to have lunch with me every day. We can head home together on some days. Just little stuff that shows how close we’ve gotten… then I’ll propose. Don’t worry, I’ll make sure it’s surprising and romantic.”

I roll my eyes. At least he’s taking this semi-seriously.

“No sex,” I insist.
