MONTENEGRO

Though Montenegro have never appeared at a major tournament, Montenegrin footballers have. Players such as Dejan Savićević and Predrag Mijatović played for Yugoslavia at the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000, while Dragoslav Jevrić kept goal for Serbia and Montenegro at the 2006 World Cup (and would have been joined in the squad by Mirko Vucinić but for injury).

An independent team since breaking away from Serbia in 2007, Montenegro are one of the world’s youngest international sides.

mala leđa (мала леђа) – little back

Every football culture has a term that serves to warn a teammate in possession of the ball about an approaching opponent, but the Montenegrin system is a little more sophisticated than the average. The word leđa (‘back’) is used when an adversary has closed in from behind and appears to be on the point of stealing possession, but when the opposing player is only just starting to approach and the player on the ball still has a bit of time to assess their options, the warning is softened to mala leđa.
