After a few minutes of the novela, a solid Brazilian melodrama of tears, betrayal, unrequited love, and product placement, Beatriz leads me outside and through a narrow alleyway that runs along the side of the building. A steep set of cement stairs leads up to the door. It appears as if this was once a maid's or groundskeeper's apartment. The door opens into a tight living room with an attached kitchenette. Everything in the kitchenette is minuscule, including the minirefrigerator, which is kept in the closet. There is a short, hard couch in the living room, an end table, and nothing else. The room leads back into a single bedroom with two twin beds. Each boasts a foam-rubber mattress covered with sky-blue sheets. Only the bedroom has windows, but as the wall between the two rooms does not reach all the way to the ceiling, it allows air and noise to pass easily between the two. There is also a small bathroom with a toilet so tightly packed into the corner that you have to sit side-saddle. Fucking foreign plumbing.
The view out the bedroom windows is of a pulsating hive of other windows staring back at the apartment. People stacked upon people: hanging laundry, lazing in the window, having sex, shouting at friends a few balconies away. There is a telephone pole that features a dozen wires that have been spliced into the main power lines, banditing electricity for anyone willing to risk their life to hook it up.
