Three months ago, Henry had opened an account in Dent’s Chicago bank with only a thousand dollars. Deposited one day, withdrawn a week later in singles, solely for the purpose of discovering exactly how the bank would package so many bills.

“Why do you need so many singles?” asked the curious teller.

“Tip money,” said Henry smiling. “I’m touring in my Packard.”

“Sure wish I was checking your oil, sir,” said the impressed teller, packing the bills into an oversized leather wallet, one usually reserved for larger denominations.

The same wallet they would hand Dent if he was to make the appropriate withdrawal. The same wallet that Henry would switch from the real cash to the counterfeit that Lamb was expecting to find. Henry reckoned that he would have a minimum of two opportunities to make his switch. Perhaps on the night of their raid, amid any confusion arising during the arrest. It might seem the riskiest, yet sometimes that turned out to be the easiest. Second, presumably safer, was to use the keys to Lamb’s evidence room. He’d copied them and then paid a delivery man a dollar to drop them behind a desk in Lamb’s office a day later.
