The Journey To The East

Similar to the role Tibet had played in the Western imagination forty years earlier, by the late 1960s – with Tibet closed and Nepal now open – Kathmandu became the home of utopian otherness for a new generation of counter-culturists.1

It was an auspicious day for travelling. On 16 July 1969, as Apollo 11 exploded from Earth's atmosphere on its journey to put the first men on the moon, Michael Hollingshead flew into Kathmandu aboard a DC-9 airliner. He travelled light, carrying only his typewriter, hand luggage and a few hundred doses of California ‘sunshine’ LSD, given to him by the Brotherhood of Eternal Love. He also had about $1000 in cash, the remainder of his fee from the A Trip to the Moon film. Any fantasies Hollingshead entertained about breathing in fresh Himalayan mountain air were quickly dispelled by the heat and humidity of the imminent monsoon. A wave of doubt as to his purpose in Kathmandu swept over him in the taxi from the airport and he had to fight off thoughts of heading to Bangkok or Australia. Instead, he checked into a cheap hotel and smoked a few chillums of hash to get his head straight. It had the desired effect.

The spell of the Himalayas was upon me. The beauty of my surroundings began to penetrate a hardened carapace, for these mountains had begun to exercise a magic thraldom of their own. And now I was part of it.2
