Chapter 14 – Deceit

Zachary stared through the gust of particles wafting all around.

Though the figure’s eyelids were shut now, and both hands had come up to defend her face, there was no mistaking those eyes. Words wouldn’t come, let alone any idea of how to tell her that she had no reason to fear.

“Ro –” started Zachary.

An uppercut rammed into his chin. His teeth smashed against one another. The girl leaped up and flung her foot forward. Zachary caught it, but felt the follow-up knee colliding with his cheek. Down again, but not letting go of the foot, he cried for her to stop.

Larger pieces of debris were churning out from under the machine that was coming back towards them. Zachary winced at the shards that grazed his neck. On her back, Rosa tightened her facial cloth, then rolled upwards.

How could she not know it was him?

Zachary sprinted after her. “Rosa, stop.”

What a stupid request to make. The machine had curved around to make a sweep of the huts. In seconds, they’d be blasted without anything to offer shelter. He grabbed her hand.

Not looking at him, or slowing down, Rosa jerked her elbow. “Get off me.” Green eyes glanced at him, but too quick to register anything except that he was male, and from what he had seen the guards attempting earlier, he admired her persistence to flee. “I said – get off. ”

Zachary caught the other fist coming across her front. Squeezing her wrist, not caring about the machine moments away, he locked eyes with her. Rosa’s pupils constricted. The facial-cloth shifted aside her from quivering lips. There wasn’t a graze, or scab upon her.

Her mouth opened wide. “Zach?”

Rosa gripped his top, pulling him to the far left of the huts. Every step across the ground lasted longer than the last. Zachary couldn’t take his eyes off the girl he held again. He’d found her at last.

Rosa’s shoulder barged him around the first line of huts, heading to a group of four. Zachary glanced over at the battering the huts took from the hovering machine. If not for the hut’s interlinked poles, then the dampened sheets would have torn apart. In no time, they reached a hut, and before Zachary made out who thrust the flap open, Rosa dived in, taking him with her. Soft blankets cushioned his landing as he rolled to the opposite end of the hut. Next to him, Rosa smiled.

No words were needed to explain the silence.

“What took so long?” demanded a female. “And who’s this? Tell him to go to his own hut.” Amelia hadn’t lost her vicious tone.

“He doesn’t have his own hut,” muttered Rosa.

A firm hand latched around his neck, hauling him away from the girl onto a rack of pans and cutlery. Zachary arched away at the thump of a shelf across his lower back.

“You heard her, find your own place,” said a thin man with three scars under his left eye. Jordan’s thumb pressed into Zachary’s throat, and then it eased.
