Kendall took a closer look at the men around him. Everyone was checking their weapons and putting mud on their clothes and skin to help them blend into the darkness. One by one, the fires were put out.

Neeka took his hand and he gave it a reassuring squeeze.

“I want you to stay here, Neeka.” Kendall kept his voice low.

She shook her head.

“You need to stay safe in case I don’t come back out. Rein needs you.”

“I’m not letting you go off on your own.”

“I won’t be on my own. I’ve a whole herd with me.” He smoothed away her frown with his thumb. “I’ll be fine. But we have to think of Rein.”

“Kendall…” Her voice caught in her throat.

He pressed his lips to hers. “Just in case. But don’t worry, I plan on kissing you again before lunch tomorrow.”

The first wave of shifters was starting down the slope towards the gates.

He kissed her again. “I’ll see you soon.”

Taikapan gave him a pat on the back and the two followed the others, leaving Neeka to worry after them.
