Madrid for Children

Madrid has plenty to keep the little ones entertained. A good place to start is Casa de Campo ( Batán), where there are swimming pools, the Zoo Aquarium de Madrid ( 902 345014; www.zoomadrid.com; Casa de Campo; adult/child €21.35/17.60; 10.30am-8.30pm Jul & Aug, reduced hours Sep-Jun; 37 from Intercambiador de Príncipe Pío, Casa de Campo) and the Parque de Atracciones ( 91 463 29 00; www.parquedeatracciones.es; Casa de Campo; >120cm/90-120cm/<90cm €29.90/23.90/free; noon-midnight Sun-Fri, to 1am Sat Jul & Aug, reduced hours Sep-Jun; 37 from Intercambiador de Príncipe Pío, Batán) amusement park, which has a ‘Zona Infantil’ with sedate rides for the really young. To get to Casa de Campo, take the Teleférico ( 91 541 11 18; www.teleferico.com; one-way/return €3.85/5.60; noon-9pm Mon-Fri, to 9.30pm Sat & Sun Jun-Aug, reduced hours Sep-May; Argüelles) , one of the world’s most horizontal cable cars, which putters for 2.5km out from the slopes of La Rosaleda.

Another possibility is Faunia ( 91 301 62 10; www.faunia.es; Avenida de las Comunidades 28; adult/child €25.50/19.50; 10am-8pm Mon-Fri & 10am-9pm Sat & Sun Jun-Aug, reduced hours Sep-May; Valdebernardo), a modern animal theme park with an ‘Amazon Jungle’ and a ‘Polar Ecosystem’. Faunia is located east of the M-40, about 7km from the city centre.

The Museo del Ferrocarril ( 902 228822; www.museodelferrocarril.org; Paseo de las Delicias 61; adult/child €5.09/3.56; 10am-3pm Tue-Thu & Sun, 10am-8pm Fri & Sat, closed Aug; Delicias) is home to old railway cars, train engines and more. The free Museo Naval Offline map Google map ( 91 523 87 89; www.armada.mde.es/museonaval; Paseo del Prado 5; 10am-7pm Tue-Sun; Banco de España) will appeal to those fascinated by ships.

The Museo de Cera Offline map Google map ( 91 319 26 49; www.museoceramadrid.com; Paseo de los Recoletos 41; adult/child €17/12; 10am-2.30pm & 4.30-8.30pm Mon-Fri, 10am-8.30pm Sat & Sun; Colón) is Madrid’s modest answer to Madame Tussaud’s, with more than 450 wax characters.

Other possibilities include seeing Real Madrid play at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu (Click here), wandering through the soothing greenery of the Parque del Buen Retiro (Click here), where in summer there are puppet shows and boat rides, or skiing at Madrid Xanadú ( 902 36 13 09; www.madridsnowzone.com; Calle Puerto de Navacerrada; per hr adult/child €22/19, day pass €36/33, equipment rental €18; 10am-midnight; 528, 534).
