“Are they here yet?” Marisol asked, walking in and tossing her thin navy and white stitched blazer on the coat rack.

“Yes. Their having snacks in the lounge,” Sara replied.

Marisol looked over at them. It was a pleasant sight. The smiles and intimate gestures the two shared was heartwarming. Marisol flipped through her messages. Her voice mail was again full, and Sara was back to writing notes. She glanced up then narrowed her gaze at Sara’s tinted eyewear. It seemed out of place. Sara never wore glasses. Marisol instantly worried.

“Why the glasses Sara?” Marisol asked.

“Um…Just to reduce the glare of the computer,” Sara replied, as she kept her focus on the computer. Marisol sat the papers down and walked closer.

“Sara…This is me. You know I know better. Take them off. Come on. I know what those are for. Now let me see,” Marisol urged. Sara’s shoulders relaxed. Soon her hands moved in slow motion towards her face, taking down the brown tinted frames that were hiding the bruised eye beneath.

“Ugh,” Marisol gasped.

“Is this Peter. The man Dimitri told me about. The man your father says is no good for you. Did he do this?” she asked.

Sara prepared to place the glasses back over her eyes as she nodded. The women were too distracted to see Hunter approaching from the rear. Sara quickly placed the glasses over her eyes but not before getting the once over by Hunter’s intrusive glare.

“What happened to you?” he asked, his demeanor taking a more serious one.

“Wow Hunter! What sensitivity you possess at this moment. Sara wrecked her father’s car. Hit her face on the steering wheel. She’s self-conscious about it. Mind your business,” Marisol scolded.

Hunter grabbed a pile of faxed documents and headed back to his office. He glanced back as he walked the long hall, his steps more deliberate. Marisol could tell he was bothered by what he saw. Hunter didn’t run so easily. She made a note to check on him. He didn’t buy the story of a car accident. He felt things deeply when he cared. Sara was everyone’s concern. She was young. Sweet. And not the type to get herself into trouble. Marisol would need to give her paid time off or everyone would be upset by her appearance.

Marisol looked around before continuing. She didn’t want Sara to feel embarrassed. The words of Dimitri now rang true. Sara was a young girl entangled in a romance that probably was much more than she could handle. And now Marisol stood hoping it wasn’t too late to help. And if by chance she was pregnant, she could be stuck with the bad decision of dating the wrong man for the rest of her life.

“Oh Sara! You don’t have to hide. Say you were in a car accident. You see it shut Hunter right up. That’s your story. Now take those off. You did nothing wrong. Hold your head up. You were picked on by the worst kind of bully. One who hits. One who wants to beat you into submission.
