Chapter 4
Three days passed since his kiss with Rosaleen, and Kegan was steadily losing his sanity over figuring out what to do about it. Every time he spotted her in the house, all he wanted to do was wrap her in his arms and kiss her again, show her exactly what she did to him, but Catherine was close by and he caught her glare. She did not like Rosaleen and made that fact well-known, although it sounded as if Rosaleen was doing as Kegan instructed and not taking orders from the horrid woman.
His parents returned on Sunday, and all his mum could do was go on and on about how happy she was that Catherine was visiting and how good she looked on Keganâs arm.
He gritted his teeth through it. He needed to talk to Rosaleen. She avoided him, but it irritated him to no end that he couldnât just do what he wantedâtrack her down and talk to her about what happened. Even more pressing than that was finding a moment alone with his parents to inform them of Catherine treatment of the staff. His parents would never stand for it if they knew, but both had been busy since their returned, and he had not had a chance yet.
There was a rare moment on Monday when his patience hit its limit and he had to get away from Catherine and her nonstop chatter about her life in London. Heâd told her time and again if they were to wedâwhich was a very big ifâthey would live on the isle and not in London. She didnât listen and didnât care, and simply cut him off one too many times when he tried to tell her how wonderful the isle was.
âYou know,â he said as nicely as possible as he patted her hand as they sat together on the couch. âI think I need a cup of tea. Would you like me to fetch you anything?â
âWhy not just call your maid?â Catherine snapped, though a smile remained on her face. âIâm certain she would love to come at your beck and call.â
âCatherine, Iâve told you before, you are not to speak of my staff like that.â
âWhy not? Sheâs trying to steal you from me. I see the way she looks at you.â She pouted on the couch and reached for his hand, though he tried to avoid her, and she rolled her eyes. âFine, I will stop saying things about her as long as she understands that she will never be one of us.â
Kegan pulled his hand from hers and ensured the best fake smile he could make was on his face. âSo thatâs a no on the tea, then?â
âIâm fine for now,â she said. âIâll call for the maid if I change my mind.â
He wanted to take the damn bell away from her but resisted the urge and left the room quickly, stomping loudly down the hall until he turned toward the other end of the mansion. He
