Anwyn was furious, in pain, and frustrated. Her head ached, she still had moments of dizziness, and she was concerned that her elbow was dislocated. Part of her fury was aimed at herself. How had she not reacted faster to the attack? It had only needed one person to take her down. It had required three men to subdue Drew, and he had been able to put at least one of those men out of action. Maybe she would never be a good fit for the team.

There was no time to worry about that. One of the other men had caught up with them, and she feared Drew had been left dead in the alley.

“Where’s Alton?” the man holding her asked.

“That mercenary guy hit him pretty hard. I had to leave both of them in the alley.”

This increased her fears for Drew. Was he wounded or dead? Along with her worry about Drew, her next concern was the realization that they were arriving in a hangar she hadn’t seen before. This one held a wide range of craft that were not configured for hyperspace.

She guessed they would probably take her somewhere within the Castone System. Once off the station, she would be harder to rescue. She became more convinced that Strento had planned this.

“Are you doing this for money?” she asked the fake guard who was still dragging her by her injured arm.

She almost had to dodge another slap, but the man paused. “Why else would I risk getting caught dressed like this on Castone Home? Of course it’s for money.”

“Then why don’t we talk?” Anwyn asked. “I have access to more funds than Strento is ever likely to give you. I can make sure the station lets you go afterward, too.”

“Yeah, right,” he replied sarcastically. “And I’m the Hrithain Emperor.”

“Strento didn’t tell you who I was, did he?” This conversation was getting harder as he continued to tug her forward. Each tug on her elbow left her nearly gasping in pain. She forced herself to make the attempt.

“Just some bitch who messed up an operation of his a few years back. “Now shut up. We’re nearly at our shuttle.”

“I’m the niece of Owen Owens, future head of the League Council. And future ruler of the planet Mythrys. I can make sure you get the opportunity to leave the station with enough credits to live comfortably for a long time,” she persisted.

The man hesitated.

“Hey! Listen to her!” the second man urged. “Sounds like a better offer than the current one.”

The man holding her was undecided for a moment, then he started moving again. “Shut up,” he warned the other man, or maybe that was aimed at Anwyn. “Do you want to be stuck running from Strento for the rest of your life?”

“With enough money, I could find a good hiding place.” The second man moved toward Anwyn. “You’re really related to that Owens guy?”

“That’s why Strento wants me.” She was unsure if that was completely true. “He’s probably going to hold me and try to get money from my uncle.
