ONCE HENRY PARKED THE truck, and unhooked the camper from it, the three men went into Henry’s house, and Patterson and Justin sat down at the table.

Justin had brought Sasha’s cage in from the truck, and because she’d been so excited to be home, he’d freed her out in the yard. After the men went inside the house, not long after the feline came bursting in through the cat door, and sat patiently by the kitchen sink. Waiting for supper.

Henry fed the cat. After what had happened out in the park, it was good to be home. Safe and sound. The aliens hadn’t gotten them.

“I didn’t expect you to actually show up here in person, Scott,” Henry muttered sideways as he made a pot of coffee. “Though, as always, it’s a nice surprise. You’re always welcome here, friend. You know that.”

“I do. But I wanted to talk to you and the Doc here face to face. Soon as possible. Take your statements while the experiences are fresh in your minds. So, I don’t miss anything that might be of importance. Even the smallest detail.” Patterson pulled out a recorder. It was state-of-the-art, compact, and brand new looking. It fit easily in Patterson’s hand. “You don’t mind, do you, if I tape our conversations?”

“Of course not, Scott. Do what you have to do. Record, take notes. Film videos. Whatever you need to do.” Henry settled himself down next to Patterson as the coffee began to perk. The lovely aroma filled the kitchen. It was all such a normal routine, but to Henry nothing seemed normal after what they’d seen at Crater Lake. “But I’m not surprised you’re here. I half expected it. I told Justin when we hit the town limits that you’d most likely be here waiting for us. I knew you’d want a firsthand account of what Justin and I saw out there in the woods. You’d want to know about the spaceships and the aliens, and we’ll tell you everything.”

“I’d appreciate it,” Patterson thanked Henry.

“I also have some news about Professor Hescott,” Henry added. “He called me the day before Justin and I took off on our camping trip. He saw an alien spaceship, too, in the park days before we did. The Professor took pictures of it, though they are blurry. I have them downloaded on my laptop. I’ll give you copies and tell you what he told me. According to Hescott, his alien spaceship wasn’t anything like the ones me and Justin saw. Imagine that?”

Henry got up and poured himself a cup of coffee, sat down again. “Help yourselves to coffee you two.”

“So let me get this straight,” Patterson got up and poured himself a cup, “you and the Doc here just decided to go out on a camping trip. For fun, huh?”

Henry disliked lying to Patterson, but the only other person who knew that Oscar had survived the explosion two years before was Justin. So, he couldn’t tell the ex-FBI agent why they had really gone out into the deep woods.
