What I Didn’t See

Karen Joy Fowler

Karen Joy Fowler was born in Bloomington, Indiana in 1950. She has won two Nebjula Awards for her short fiction and she won the World Fantasy Award for her collection, Black Glass. Fowler is also the author of five novels, including her debut Sarah Canary (described by critic John Clute as one of the finest First Contact novels ever written), Wit’s End, and The Jane Austen Book Club. She lives in Santa Cruz, California with husband Hugh Sterling Fowler II. They have two grown children.

“What I Didn’t See” provoked a bit of controversy among a few readers who questioned its inclusion in SCIFICTION. It wasn’t the first story I’ve published without a direct link to the science fiction and fantasy genres (I published a few in OMNI), but it was the first that provoked outrage. Aside from the story’s power as story, its “conversation” with a famous classic story of the 1960s gives it an extra jolt. I also note that its dark edge enabled me—with no hesitation—to include it my horror half of the Year’s Best Fantasy and Horror.
