Strategy 3: Call a Friend

I’ll repeat this advice over and over throughout the book because relationships make a huge difference, not just for your personal life but for your career. (That’s why I dedicated an entire chapter to the topic!) You have to find people, several if possible, to whom you can reach out when you need a sounding board. Text a mentor: “I have a tough situation at work and I’d love your advice.” If you first work through it on paper and in your head, then you will be a lot clearer and more succinct when asking someone else for her insight.

Sometimes all we need is a boost of energy and positive reinforcement to help us get through. Other times we need to hear someone we respect remind us of our strengths, assure us that “this too shall pass,” and encourage us to stick it out. Author and the New York Times’s first gender editor, Jessica Bennett, provides numerous strategies to help women push back on gender-biased and self-limiting behaviors including this great advice, “If you hear an idea from a woman that you think is good, back her up. You’ll have more of an effect than you think and you’ll establish yourself as a team player too.”4

Join a Lean In Circle, connect through Bumble, attend a local chamber of commerce event, or reconnect with your alma mater’s alumni association. You don’t have to go at this alone. And even if you feel that you have a good number of people in your corner, continue to grow your network and expand your own availability to people who could use a trustworthy source of advice.
