Putting the Research to Use

Although most educators believe that curricular adaptations should be provided to students who have demonstrated mastery of the regular curriculum, previous research indicates that actual adaptations are minor or even nonexistent in most classrooms throughout the country. Curriculum compacting is one adaptation that has been recommended for meeting the needs of high achieving students, and the research reported in this article supports its use. The results should alleviate concerns of both teachers and administrators who may have been hesitant about the use of curricular adaptations because of testing issues. This study indicates that teachers can implement curriculum compacting with capable students, without fears that normative national test scores will decline when 40%-50% of the regular curriculum content is eliminated for students who display content mastery.
