Assured by Walsh and the others that there was no story to cover, the newspaper and radio report­ers had already drifted out of the park. But the TV news teams were more persistent, less easily persuaded that two explosions in one morning was just a crazy coincidence. Competition for rat­ings was tough in the local market, and big stories meant big ratings. Explosions, especially in the subway, made New Yorkers very, very nervous. They wanted to know who, what, and why-and they wanted to know it now. The TV correspon­dents had orders not to leave without a statement that would translate into a sexy sound bite.

Walsh sympathized, but he, too, had his orders. “Nothing more to see, people. You gotta evacu­ate,” he insisted, trying to shoo the reporters away from the park.

They were all talking at once, calling out ques­tions. “No leads? No demands? Have you called in the FBI? Are you saying this isn’t linked to the Bonwit’s bomb?”

“All I’m saying, we got things under pretty fair control, and you gotta clear the area,” he said.

Nobody moved. He crossed bis arms against his chest and shook his head. No comment. They weren’t going to get anything else out of him—or out of anyone else connected with the investiga­tion.
