Chapter 12

The world seen through amber eyes

She had drifted out of consciousness for most of the drive after the escape. In her waking moments, she had thanked Tifi and Chainbreaker; the latter one was in an extraordinarily bad mood. She said something about killing a cop and was obviously angry with her. Fair enough was her last thought as she slipped into a deep slumber again.

When she woke up, she was lying on a couch and heard the humming sound of electric engines. They were on a plane. She tried to sit up, but her hand slipped from the leather. Tifi was there to grab her and help her up, then handed her a bottle of water—it was one of the expensive French ones. They cost a fortune, as they were still filtered through volcanic ground and not refreshed by chemicals.

“Drink. Those tranquilizers dehydrate you pretty badly,” he said and smiled at her. She couldn’t help herself. Instead of taking the bottle, she embraced him.

“You came for me,” she whispered, and she smiled at him. He returned the embrace.

“It was really her,” he said and nodded to Chainbreaker. She was sitting in a huge seat, her legs dragged up, and looking at Cypher.

Cypher let go of Tifi as she saw the other woman’s accusing eyes and took the bottle.

“Where are we?” she asked and looked around. It wasn’t just any plane—it was the luxury version of one.

“We stole their plane,” Chainbreaker said with a cool voice.

Cypher coughed as she got some water in her windpipe. “You used Daedalus on a plane?” she asked.

“I used Daedalus to get in and then stripped the security down and properly hacked it. The AI was kinda cooperative,” she said and leaned back. Cypher stared at her. Another use she hadn’t considered. Using that control to facilitate a proper hack was kind of brilliant.

“Where are we going?” she asked and drank again. Tifi was right; she was thirsty.

“Bangkok, as planned,” Chainbreaker said.

“Can we just land there?” Cypher wondered, and Tifi smiled as if he wanted to mock her for doubting them like that.

“My friends there hacked the airport and got us landing permission. Or they will have done so by the time we arrive.” Chainbreaker sighed. “Worst secured airport in the world.”

Cypher looked at her and nodded, then she smiled.

“You guys were amazing. I don’t know what to say,” she said and looked at both of them with all her gratitude.

“We killed two people, one of them a cop, and crashed a car on the bridge. We can probably never return to Hong Kong after that. We might be China’s most wanted now. I hope they don’t find out Yeng helped us.” Chainbreaker sighed.

“He got us the guns,” Tifi explained. He didn’t seem to care about the two dead people. “I hope we killed three,” he said.

“Oh yes, I do too,” Cypher said, remembering Roger.

Chainbreaker’s resources were amazing. Getting guns, organizing her escape, hacking a damned plane, and having friends who could hack airports. She was the real deal, not a fake like herself.
