8. Come Fly with Me

I hummed and swayed as I hit the brew button, holding my hands above my head and swiveling my hips. “I still don’t have the proper dexterity to be a good Elvis Tribute Artist,” I said to myself, “but Carrington does. He already has the hair, too. I’ll have to tell him.”

Coffee spewed into my cup, and I quick-stepped in place. I twirled in my black-and-white checkerboard dress; embroidered cherries swished as I glanced across the room. Carrington leaned in the doorway and smiled predatorily at me.

I screamed, “Jesus Christ! When the hell did you get back?”

“I believe that you’re confused, Clara.” He pushed away from the wall, grinning impishly. “I am no longer Jesus Christ. I’m now the devil. You’re getting your archetypes mixed up, my love.”

“Well, I haven’t had my third cup of coffee yet.”

“Hop to it, then.” He smoothed his burgundy tie, which completed his three-piece dove-gray suit. “It’s nearly time to celebrate.”

My brows furrowed after I reached for my cup. “Celebrate?”

He clucked his tongue as he took my right hand. He kissed the yellow bruises shaped like two of his fingers on my wrist before flicking his golden-hazel eyes to my face. Then he stared as if he could wish away the discoloration.

“Forgive me, darling,” he said. “I never meant to do this to you.” My heart pounded again. “I shall be more careful next time.” He placed his lips to my pulse and whispered, “I promise.” I gazed at him dreamily, and he laughed fairly hard. “Should you be attempting to stroke my ego with that look, it’s working.”

“You’ve completely ruined me.” I flumped against the counter. “I don’t even think masturbation will compare with what you did to me. Jackass.”

He hugged my waist and rocked us, humming my tune. “I would apologize; however, I’m not very sorry. As I don’t believe that you would wish for me to become a liar, please take solace in the knowledge I will try my damnedest to achieve the height of the bar that I set last night.” He kissed my cheek and let me go.

I grumbled as he walked away laughing, then I sipped my coffee before wandering to the window. “Nighttime in Vegas is fabulous,” I said. “All the lights blinking make me feel alive.” Do you really need to feel alive? “No. Probably not,” I answered aloud.

Cars fought for spots on the road while I remembered how Carrington and I had made love for over an hour until he gave in to his climax. He was impressive for any man but especially badass for someone nearing his mid-forties. I almost tapped out twice.

“I don’t know what this is, but it isn’t sex,” I said. “Oh, shit. I have to call the bank tomorrow.”

Getting drunk and married in Vegas was “a bit of a sticky wicket,” as Carrington would say, but doing it with a foreign television star who had a ton of assets and an attorney almost as vicious as Steph was zero-caffeine-in-sight-with-a-hangover-headache bad.
