Morning sunlight eventually awoke Christina, forcing her out of bed an hour later than she typically would have gotten up. How could she have forgotten to set her alarm? Her watch. She couldn’t picture where she’d last placed it before falling asleep. In all honesty, she couldn’t remember putting herself to bed. Having bid Shane and Aurora a fine farewell last night, she’d taken the prescribed dosage of pain meds on a full stomach of pumpkin pie. The funny thing was she didn’t even recall climbing the stairs afterward. Looking down at her chest, she realized she’d fallen asleep in her jeans and UNLV sweatshirt—the only comfortable things she’d managed to find after wrapping up the Christmas card photo shoot.

Making her way downstairs, she smelled fresh coffee brewing. And maple syrup! “Girls?” she called out, using her one functional hand to rub the sleep from her eyes. “What’s going on in the kitchen?”

“Guess what, Mommy,” said the excited voice of her youngest. “We made you waffles!”

“Shhhh. I told you not to ruin the surprise,” Joanna said, turning on the kitchen sink faucet. “You were supposed to let her see for herself.”

Beside it sat a gravy boat filled with the sweet amber liquid that had tantalized her nose from the very top of the steps. “I can’t remember ever being this hungry for breakfast. To what do I owe the pleasure?”

“We wanted to make you happy,” Leena said, licking a spoon she’d scraped against a nearly empty jar of strawberry preserves.

“And I am.” Christina noticed her youngest sporting an unfamiliar apron. “Are you wearing that correctly, Leena?”

“I warned her to pick a different one,” Joanna said, pulling three plates from the cupboard. “But she refused.”

“Shane said I could have it.” Leena deposited the spoon in the sink. “I think it’s funny.”

“He said you could borrow it,” Joanna said. “You know you have to give it back, right?”

“I will.” She came around the counter to give her mom a hug.

Seeing flour splotched and caked down Leena’s whole frontside, Christina kept away a few strategic inches during the embrace and used her good arm to award a couple pats on the shoulder. Taking a step back, she squinted at the barely visible outline of a naked man. “Is that the statue of David on your apron?”

“Busted,” Joanna said, heading to the table with plates in hand.

“Am I in trouble, Mommy?” Leena pouted. “Please tell me you’re not mad.”

Christina laughed hysterically, knowing full well there had to be a good story behind why her daughter had come home with one of Shane’s prized kitchen garments. That she wore it inside out made it even more hilarious. Was she trying to
