THE PATH TO STRATEGIC SOURCING IS CHALLENGING

The path to excellence in strategic sourcing proceeds along the series of actions described in this chapter. They include:

Prepare for Change

•Convince senior management of the value in strategic sourcing. Dollars speak loudest, so it is usually necessary to quantify strategic sourcing’s potential impact on innovation or cost.

Understand the Opportunity

•Identify the nature of the buy and who is doing it. The potential savings and other benefits will be constrained by the scope of purchases identified in this analysis. This step requires an interface with an IT group. The data are there but must be extracted from the organization.

•Segregate the buy into standard categories and specifications in order of priority to the business.

•Identify and segregate the suppliers based on value to the business, ability to contribute extra efforts, and related positive characteristics.

•Assign responsibilities to buyers by category of purchase, but watch out—there usually is a small army of unauthorized buyers doing purchasing.
