Chapter 43

Dr. Bertelli finished his notes on a patient’s file and handed it to his nurse Rosie with instructions about a prescription.

“Is that the last one, Rosie?”

Rosie smiled, taking the folder from Dino’s hand. “Yes sir. The next appointment is not until two. You should get away from this place for a while. Take Lindsay to lunch and I don’t mean just a quick burger at McDonald’s. You could use the break. Peter will be here.”

Dino grinned. “Sounds like good medical advice to me, Doctor Rosie.” He made his nurse crack a big smile. “I guess Peter can handle things. He’s not bad for an intern.”

“Yeah, Peter’s good. The kids sure like him, as I said they would. I had my doubts about him at first, but he grows on you.”

“That he does. It’s hard not to like him. I think it’s that childlike innocence he seems to emanate. He’s got such a cheery attitude, taking life as it comes.”

“Peter knows how to pace himself, but you work too hard. Seriously Doc, go now or I’ll tell Hank you’ve skipped lunch again.” Rosie pointed her wagging finger at him.

“Heaven forbid, I don’t want to get Hank on my case. You’re tough enough.” Dino scanned the waiting room. “Where is Lindsay anyway? I thought she was going over our bills from last week?”

“She’s in your apartment. It was noisy in here. I hope you don’t mind, I let her use your desk.”

“Heck, no.” Dino reached inside the pocket of his white coat and pulled out a velvet jewelry box. “Hey Rosie, I didn’t get a chance to show you what I got Lindsay for her birthday. Tony had it sent over. He helped me pick it out.”

Dino slowly opened the box, revealing a fine gold necklace with a pendent shaped into the form of two hearts intertwined. A diamond sat in the middle where the hearts met. Rosie’s eyes widened.

“O-o-o-o, that’s pretty, Doc. I didn’t know you had such excellent taste.”

“Very funny. And yes, you’re right, I don’t. Tony has the excellent taste and style. He picks out all the jewelry for his wife, Cassie. He said this was exactly right for where our relationship is now.”

Rosie grinned. “Oh, and what is that?”

Dino shut the box and returned it to his pocket. “Well, I think it’s getting serious.” Dino pulled Rosie’s arm and they sat down together on one of the couches. “Rosie, I’ve fallen in love with Lindsay. I’m going to tell her on her birthday and give her this. I hope she feels the same. I think she does.”

Rosie crossed her chest with both arms and gave Dino a determined stare. “It’s about time you saw the writing on the wall. We were all wondering when you two would see what we all see.”

Dino sat back against the couch and arched his eyebrows. “Oh really. I guess we’re not hiding anything from you guys. Is that what Hank and Mark think too?”

“Uh duh, of course. So does Peter, and he’s new around here.
