CHAPTER 12

Daryn put his hands on my shoulders. “The council knows you are a necro. They wouldn’t let you move into a place likely to be infested by spirits.”

I smiled at him, but I couldn’t shake the feeling of being watched and the only thing I felt from Daryn, was concern. His instincts were not on high alert so there was nothing to fight in the vicinity. “I’m just jumpy, I guess.”

“Honey, your life has literally been turned upside down and stomped on. I am surprised you didn’t blow a magical gasket,” he said in a teasing manner.

“It was tempting.”

“Mom!” Caleb’s voice echoed through the house and I dropped the baseball back into the box and dashed to the stairs.

I hadn’t realized how much I missed my son until I saw him drop two large duffel bags at the front door. I hugged him and he laughed as he released me. “I was expecting you to be mad. This is a nice surprise.” His brown eyes and quirky smile always reminded me of Len. I didn’t hate Len; he had given me Caleb after all. My ex wasn’t a bad person he just wasn’t reliable and as I got older, I needed stability in my life. “I missed you, but this situation is not your fault. I will fix it.”

Caleb frowned. “I don’t want you to fix it. I chose to be a hunter. Alaric told me your parents died and things were hard on you growing up. I’m sorry you went through that. I don’t blame you for protecting me, but I have to make my own choices. If you choose to return to Cape Cod, I will understand.”

I almost laughed. Alaric had told Caleb the bare minimum. That was the council for you. “There is more to it than that. I can’t return to Cape Cod. At least not for a while.”

He nodded and glanced around at the house. “Nice digs. They didn’t tell me how you disappeared. Did the council portal you? Kliona mentioned they have those.”

I wasn’t surprised Kliona had teased my son with tales of magic and powers. What teenager wouldn’t be impressed with such things? “Not exactly, but I was portaled to the chambers. Did Alaric tell you why I am here?”

Caleb nodded. “He said you agreed to work for the council. It’s a trial run or something, but he said you had a new home so I signed off on the lease and gave our notice.”

“What!”

Daryn put his hand on the small of my back. “You don’t need that apartment, Shannon. You will be here for a while. I’m sure there are many single moms who could use affordable housing.” Why did he have to sound so reasonable? The landlord was probably doing the happy dance. My rent was so low because I hadn’t moved in fifteen years; he could raise the rent for the next tenant. Still, it was a lower-income area, and he had a waiting list a mile long for apartments.
