Chapter 19

When I woke up, I was sweating and I felt terrified although I wasn’t sure why. It felt as though something terrible had happened, but I couldn’t remember what.

I looked over and Sebastian wasn’t laying in the bed anymore. My heart pounded against my chest… where had he gone? Had something happened to him?

Maybe I was somewhere else? No, I wasn’t. Everything looked the same as it had when I went to bed. Maybe something had happened to him and I slept through it.

I abruptly sat up. My body felt stiff as panic set in. I scanned the room, but he wasn't there.

“Sebastian?” I whispered in a panicked voice. When he didn’t answer, I gripped the mattress and called out louder, “Sebastian!”

The door to the room instantly opened and Sebastian rushed to my side. He looked around the room with wide eyes. He thought I was in trouble.

“What is it?” he said so fast his words blended into one.

I turned to him, my heart still beating far too fast. My hands were clenched into tight fists. “I thought something happened to… I… I must have had a nightmare,” I blurted.

I didn't want him to know that I had been worried something had happened to him. It was stupid. He would have thought I was stupid. I wasn't the girl that cowered in the back waiting for her knight in shining armor. I was the girl that wore the armor. What was happening to me?

“Never mind,” I said getting up out of the bed. “Is it morning?”

“Yeah,” Sebastian said still looking at me as though he was worried.

I started to walk towards the door but something tugged at my hand. Sebastian pulled me back and forced me to face him. Our bodies were so close I could feel his warmth.

“Joely,” he said in a low, rough voice. He looked at the floor and then into my eyes. He opened his mouth but then closed it again.

I was dying to know what he was going to say. The look in his eyes made my cheeks warm and my breathing slow.

There was a knock at the door and he instantly dropped my hand. He took in a sharp breath as he moved a step back.

“It's all going to work out, you’ll see. If you need me, I'm there,” he said and walked towards the door leaving me standing there, staring at the wall.

Whatever was happening with us had to stop. Was he feeling it too? Maybe it was all in my head, but it definitely had to stop, before something started.

“OK,” I said softly as he opened the door. Maggie, Darren and Elias were standing on the other side looking in at us. Darren stared at me with a strange expression on his face. I wondered if my cheeks were red, as they felt warm.

“We're ready, right Joely?” Sebastian said stepping out into the hall. I nodded and followed them down the hall.
