CHAPTER 16

ALICE

They spent their remaining days together sightseeing, and their remaining nights at Ryan’s house. The date of Alice’s departure was looming ever larger.

“I’ve always wanted to come up here.” Alice leaned against Ryan, which felt positively blissful. They were in Griffin Park, with the bright city spread out before them like a carpet of a thousand twinkling lights. Generally, Alice found Los Angeles loud, sprawling, and dirty; she’d never get used to all the highways and the traffic… but once in a while, it could be a truly magical place. “When I was a kid, I really wanted to move to California,” she remarked. “Mostly because my mom talked about it so much, I guess. I pictured it as this amazing place that was sunny and warm every day—which, when you’re growing up in London, sounds like heaven.”

“What do you think of it now?”

“I’d miss my family, weird as they are. Even though we only see each other sporadically.” Only when she said it out loud did Alice realize that she really did miss her family. Her brothers were a fixture in her life. She usually saw or spoke to Jarred several times a week; she and Sean had their monthly get-togethers; she and Henry met for lunch every two weeks. Her relationship with Liam was good as well; though she only called him on occasion, she often commented on his Instagram photos, which at least let her know where he was. He had a ton of followers, though his account was under a pseudonym—just another way he was staying out of the public eye.

All the same, she was well aware that her life in London had gotten fairly routine. Everything ran according to plan, but she didn’t get a lot of excitement. No euphoric whooping and hollering here, no impulsive wackiness, no heart-stopping thrills. Probably time to fix that. She was thirty, not a hundred.
