The Hunt Goes On

Gladius

Gladius had been out-played by a tiny human.

Whether or not that human was his mate was immaterial. He’d allowed himself to be led to a location, and then stood there as useless as a stuffed kalni on a feast platter while she enacted her own plan. With no input from him. She’d hadn’t so much as glanced at him before she’d slapped that card into her relative’s hand and sent him on his way.

My mate lacks teamwork.

Though she’d worked with her relative well enough.

Now, Gladius had to figure out how to get Kimani to extend that same trust to him. They were mates. He should be the one she trusted above all others, shouldn’t he? He hunched his shoulders and propped a hip against a low counter used for preparing work.

Stars. This mate business is complicated.

Scapril twitching, he studied the tiny, soft-skinned human standing defiantly before him. Chin lifted, eyes flashing, she had positioned herself just out of reach. The damned female had backed him into a corner, and she wasn’t sorry for it. Not in the least. He didn’t need his helm’s datafeed to tell him the firm set of her jaw and crossed arms marked determination.

Respect warred with frustration in his chest.

Crossing his arms, he searched for words.

The stars would hardly pick a female without a warrior’s soul for him. He’d simply never considered that warrior’s soul being used against him. Unless she wasn’t his mate after all?

His insides twisted, rejecting the thought.

No. He’d already mated her.

She had to be the one.

Still, his mate should respect his experience—or at least trust him enough to ask before sending some ill-equipped clan member off to invite more trouble. From what Gladius had seen, this Octavian was more farmer than scout. The whole undertaking spelled trouble. Even if the human succeeded, and the human authorities he reached posed no threat.

And even if it wasn’t a terrible idea to support the rest of the local inhabitants…

He shuffled his feet and grudgingly admitted her plan had merit.

Enlisting human aid was better than going on a lone Apex’ir rampage and getting himself and Kimani killed. Though it vexed him. If his home world with all their warriors had failed to defeat the Fever, what could mere human “warriors” possibly do? Either they’d get in the way—the most likely outcome—or they’d shame his fallen brethren.

Only Kraxus had faced a broken moon.

So far, Earth only faced the Fever.

“Are you going to glare at me from behind that helm all night?” Her brow lifted in obvious challenge.

“No,” he grumbled.

“Look.” She ran her hand over her hair. “I’m sorry to end-run you like that. But I had to do something to help my town. We do need help. What else were we going to do?”

He didn’t have a good answer.

“You don’t have a good answer to that, do you?” She took a step toward him, and her tongue darted out.

His sensors registered a spike in her body temperature.

Curious.

Had besting him pleased her? He supposed he’d take solace in that—a warrior should please his mate in all ways, after all.
