Chapter

Twenty-Nine

Something dug painfully into her back. They all tumbled through the portal successfully but landed in a giant dog-pile. Wherever they were, the floor beneath them was wooden and dusty.

Sera sneezed.

“Get off me!”

The pile began to shift as Cassandra whined. Sera stood, brushing off her clothes and looking around. The room they were in seemed very small and abandoned. The walls were unadorned and white, and the floors were an intricate layering of wood paneling.

“Alright, Thomas, we all made it in one piece. Where exactly are we?”

Sera didn’t have an answer for Jonathan but was relieved to see he was back in his human form. The vampire-demon thing freaked her out a bit.

“Wherever we are, it’s obviously abandoned.”

Cassandra poked around the small room, sniffing at the amount of dust and cobwebs. It was empty except for a small trunk and one old chair that was upturned in the corner. The rest of the demons spread out, but the room was narrow at about only twenty yards long and five yards wide. There were two doors on either side of them; the one to the left was the one they had tumbled from.

Reg went up to the one on the right and pushed; the door refused to budge. “Permission to open it?” Reg grinned in anticipation while Justin rolled his eyes.

Everyone turned to watch Reg as he closed his eyes to shift back into his demon form.

Nothing happened.

His eyes opened in panic. Alarmed, everyone else immediately tried to shift back to their demon forms, but with no results.

“What the hell—”

“Why can’t I shift?”

“Something’s really wrong—”

“We’re all going to die here!”

“Shut it.” Justin hadn’t shouted, but the amount of anger and venom put into those two words sent the other demons whimpering to their knees.

“That’s better. Now, nobody panic. This is certainly a complication, but nothing we can’t handle.”

He turned to Sera. “Can you get back through the portal?”

Sera turned back towards the door on the left, reaching out for the doorknob. Her hand went right through it like water. “Yeah, I think we’re good.”

Justin nodded, satisfied. He turned towards the others. “Everything is fine. We’re not trapped. No one is going to die. We’ll just have to do things the .… human way while we’re here.”

They all grumbled but didn’t protest otherwise.

“Assuming this clothing is period correct and not costumes, I would hazard a guess that we are in the late 18th century,” Cassandra said, rifling through the opened trunk. Reg and Victor groaned as they were buried in a flurry of silk and fabric as she tossed the entire contents of the trunk out onto their heads.

“Here are the clothes for the boys, Sera, and I will wear these dresses.”

Jonathan stared at the piles incredulously. “I don’t see a difference between them!”

Cassandra’s eyes narrowed. “Let me dress Sera; then I’ll help you since it’s obvious I’m the only one who knows what I’m doing.”

The boys stared.

“TURN AROUND!”

They jumped and immediately obeyed, even Justin turning to face the wall as Cassandra ruthlessly attacked Sera with pins and ribbon.
