Chapter Eighteen
I poured myself a cup of vanilla-flavored coffee before taking a seat on the porch. I wafted the steam toward my nose. Mari did the same with a cup of her own.
Lula brought out a tray of polvorones, tri-colored Mexican cookies that she bought from La Estrella. âYou were gone a long time.â
I snapped up the nearest cookie. Lula knew I couldnât resist them.
âDervla did an expert job,â Mari said. âShe wheedled out more information than a star journalist interviewing a spy.â
âThatâs why we need her so much.â Lula pointed to her ears. âEmil was clueless when I talked to him. All he could think about was how much pain he was in.â
Mari rocked in her chair. âHeâs all right now.â
âHow would you know that?â Lula abruptly looked at her sister, who in turn nodded toward me.
Lula shook her head. âShe didnât!â
Mari rocked harder. âDonât blame her too much. Itâs a lot to take in.â
Lula imitated jabbing pins into a doll. âYou . . . ?â
âJoachÃn and I were playing around. I thought it would make me feel better.â
The nanas fell silent. For the second time that week I assumed Iâd be banished from the family.
Lula pulled up her skirt a bit to allow for ventilation. âItâs a common mistake. Sometimes even fatal.â She caught her sisterâs eyes. A flicker of understanding passed between them. Theyâd had over seventy years to build a close bond around all their secrets.
âI wasnât trying to hurt him,â I said. âNot seriously, at least. You have to believe me on that.â
âOf course you werenât, honey,â Lula said. âThis isnât anything you would know about. Youâre too young.â
âAnd youâre not Hispanic,â added Mari.
I was saved by sincerity. Had I been lying, Lula would have known it anyway, and Mari would have been alerted by my aura.
âThere must be an Irish equivalent,â Lula said to Mari. âOtherwise, how did she activate it?â
Mari picked up a polvorón. âIâve asked myself the same thing all afternoon.â
I felt more confused than ever. âHow could I activate something? I didnât do anything special. You saw me! I was right here when I put in the first pin.â
Mordy chose this moment to saunter onto the porch and lie next to my feet.
Mari nodded. So did Lula.
âNo,â I said. âYouâre not telling me that the cat knows something about me that I donât.â
Lula topped off her coffee. âMordy is never wrong. He can sense things about people. Thatâs why we never reprimand him if he bites. He only punishes someone for a good reason.â
âThatâs why he never bites you, angel,â said Mari. âHe knows youâre good-hearted.â
I had superpowers, and the nanas knew my true nature because of a cat. The world had gone crazy. It had chewed me into bits and swallowed me up.
âNow what?â I asked glumly. âEmil will kill me when he finds out about this.â
âWhy would we tell him, angel?â Mari asked.
âHe wouldnât believe us even if we did,â added Lula.
I was having cookies and coffee with two Cheshire cats and one who bit bad people.
