The Lord Napier Hackney Wick E9

This pub opened in 1865. Along with the nearby Lea Tavern, which was demolished ten years ago, it was one of two nineteenth-century pubs to serve a district of mixed Victorian houses and industrial sites. Opposite stood a distillery belonging to Carless, Capel & Leonard. The leading distillery in Britain for American crude oil, today the company is best remembered for inventing the trade name ‘petrol’ in the 1890s to advertise its fuel.

The adjacent railway station, visible in the background of this photo, has a dark history. On 9 July 1864, the body of Thomas Briggs was discovered on the line between Bow and Hackney Wick: while aboard the train from Fenchurch Street he had been robbed and murdered by a German man named Franz Müller.

The Lord Napier finally closed in 1995. Along with the adjoining two derelict houses, it is one of the sole survivors of the original nineteenth-century development. The pub has been squatted for many years, and has become a Hackney landmark due to the colourful street art on its walls. But the area is rapidly gentrifying, and planning approval has recently been granted to refurbish the building and reopen it as a public house.
