Chapter Twenty-One: Noah

As he filled his backpack, Noah couldn’t stop his hands from trembling. Ever since the meeting with Danforth had been arranged, he’d felt uneasy. So many things could go wrong with the mission. And this time, he wasn’t only worried about his fellow Eremus citizens. Now he feared for Faith and her friends, the innocent pawns stuck in the middle.

He didn’t fully trust his own side anymore. Not all of them, at least. His ma, Flynn, Ruth, and Ella, a few others in their close circle. But he knew Jacob’s determination to get the better of Danforth would let little stand in the way. Paulo seemed to have aligned himself with their leader. And then there was Harden’s ma, who had made no secret of her indifference towards the Bellator prisoners.

It had been a week since Professor Kemp had arrived in Eremus. A week since Faith had suggested the girls’ wristclips be used to bring Danforth into a position of Eremus’ choosing, allowing them to have control over the meeting. Following these twin revelations, Jacob had made quick work of speaking to Madeleine, who had confirmed that Kemp was indeed a member of the resistance.

Posted undercover at the academy, she was of great importance to them, so her refusal to follow orders when she had charged off after the students had not gone down well. The news that she was safe had come as a relief, however, and Madeleine had asked Jacob to take good care of her. As a result, she had been moved into the same cave as the rest of the girls.

Jacob had also enlisted Madeleine’s help to charge the wristclips, and to deliver the anonymous message which stated when the meeting was to take place, and gave their demands.

Danforth was to attend in person.

Danforth was not to bring more than twenty guards.

Danforth would not know the location of the meeting until an hour before.

The meeting was to be peaceful.

Bellator would give Eremus a chance to state its concerns and be listened to.

In return, Jacob guaranteed he would bring along two of the academy students, as proof that they were healthy and being kept safe. If all went well, he would use the same method to arrange a second meeting, where agreements could be finalised and the girls’ safe return arranged. Both parties had things to offer now, and Jacob seemed certain they could come to an agreement which suited them all.

Noah wasn’t so sure.

He hadn’t seen Faith since the day in Kemp’s cave. Now that Jacob was suspicious of their relationship, he had not been allowed anywhere near her. The prisoners had only been permitted to join the rest of the community once for a meal in recent days, and Jacob had insisted on them sitting with the council.

He hadn’t even dared to ask his ma how Faith had seemed. He wasn’t sure if she knew about the kiss that Paulo had witnessed, but he didn’t want to give her any more indication of how strong his feelings for Faith were.
