Chapter Twenty-Eight

Tuvto Eni Oktnam

A Dream of Three Wolves

Three wolves circled each other: A black wolf, a gray wolf, and a white wolf. The gray alpha wolf was strongest and tore into the black wolf, and the black beast soon lay wounded and dying. The white she-wolf was weakest, but the gray wolf feared her. When the gray wolf moved in for the kill, to finish off the black wolf and claim his supremacy as alpha, the white wolf stepped into the fray. She lay down at the side of the black wolf and the gray wolf stepped back and into the trees, snarling and pacing but never attacking.

Naked and defenseless, the white wolf held all the power, protecting the black wolf, holding off the gray wolf, and all three lived in balance. Three great wolf packs lived in harmony and peace reigned in the forest.

‘Give me the white wolf,’ the man on the gray throne said. ‘Or you will suffer and die.’

The people knew the white wolf was naked and defenseless. ‘We can take the she-wolf. She cannot stop us. When we give her to the man on the gray throne, he will no longer threaten us.’

The people took the white she-wolf and gave her to the man on the gray throne, and he laughed. The gray wolf killed the black wolf and turned its eyes on the people. ‘Now you will die!’ the gray wolf screamed, and ran into their midst, snapping and gnashing and tearing limbs. The gray wolf reached Leisheno, pushed her to the ground, snarled, bared his fangs, and—

Leisheno woke from the dream, her body coated in sweat even in the cool air before sunrise. She sat up and turned her eyes toward Huvtan, sleeping peacefully at her side. As often happens to men before they wake, Huvtan’s prick was fully erect, dreaming of a woman to enter. For half a breath Leisheno was tempted, but rasht would have to wait.

She shook Huvtan’s shoulder. “Wake up, Brother.”

“Good morning,” he said, sleep in his voice.

Leisheno slapped his face. “Wake up, Brother.”

Huvtan jumped to a sitting position, his eyes wide in shock.

“Put on your tog. We have work to do.”

Leisheno pulled her brown tog around her waist, slipped into her sandals, and tied them to her ankles. She rose to her feet and grabbed both of her spears.

“Let’s go.”

A black wolf snarled and howled in the forest. Limping, it snapped and growled as a gray wolf circled it. Without warning the wolf rushed in and jumped onto the wounded wolf. They struggled and tore at each other and in the end the wounded wolf whined and howled, an unmoving ball of fur and flesh awaiting death on the forest floor. The other wolf grinned and snarled and turned its rabid eyes past the wounded wolf, gazing with lust on two figures trembling in the trees. Alma stood nearby, watching the prowling wolf advance, its eyes constant, full of terror and desire and thirst to kill. The wounded wolf
