âDid Eli say what he wanted to talk to you about?â Axel asked as they made their way toward the RV park.
Britney ignored the question, consumed by the way people averted their eyes as she passed. She figured people would be angry, but scared? The fear in their eyes hurt her more than she ever imagined it would.
âHey,â Axel touched her arm, âyou okay?â
âFine.â Britney brushed her pain aside. âBack to Eli. He didnât say much, just that he wanted to talk about Nathaniel.â
âI didnât realize they were close.â
Britney scrunched her nose. âThey werenât. Nathaniel never warmed up to Eli. Pretty sure they didnât work together either. He showed Mia around while Juliet hung out with Eli.â
Axel took Britneyâs arm and guided her behind a nearby tree. âDo you really think we can trust anything Eli has to say?â
The same thought had crossed Britneyâs mind. âI donât know, but if he has some insight on what Nathaniel was doing when he got bitten, then itâs worth a listen.â
âListening, yes.â Axel ran a hand through his hair. âJumping to conclusions, no.â
âI swear I wonât jump to any conclusions without some sort of concrete proof.â Britney checked her watch. âLetâs get this over with. Itâs already been an exhausting day, and itâs barely noon.â
Axel draped an arm over her shoulder. âYes, it has.â
Britney chewed on her bottom lip as they walked in silence. âI wanted to ask you something, now that weâre alone.â
Axel cocked an eyebrow. âShould I be worried?â
A small smile tugged at her lips even though her insides were in knots. âAre you mad at me about how I handled the Jerry situation?â
He didnât answer right away, which made her feel worse, she but kept her mouth shut and waited for him to reply.
âMad? No. I just wish you would have talked to me about it first.â
âI was so angry when Jerry refused the exam, the words came flyinâ out before I had time to think. I regretted it as soon as I said it, but it was too late.â
Axel kissed the top her head. âI know.â
âI never imagined he would take it this far. I swear, I thought he would cave.â
They stopped in front of the twinsâ camper and faced each other.
âYou canât second guess yourself.â Axelâs eyes drifted to a group of people hanging out across the way.
Britney noticed how their eyes followed her; their care-free conversation changed to hushed whispers. âTheyâre scared of me.â
âGive them time.â
âThey hate me. Iâm not sure any amount of time will change that.â
The camper door opened, and Eli poked his head out. âI thought I heard voices. Come on in. Mia and I have been waiting for you.â
If it bothered him that Axel tagged along, it didnât show.
They followed him inside and scooted into the bench seating across from Mia.
âHi.â Britney feigned a smile. âI didnât realize you had something to tell us about Nathaniel, too.â
Mia shook her head. âNo. Iâm just here for Eli.â
âMy sisterâs the best.â Eli settled into the seat beside Mia.
